Ron Paul Wins CPAC 2012 GOP Presidential Straw Poll

Let's be clear here--Ron Paul does nothing positive for the Republican party these days as he stands an approximately 0% chance of getting elected president in 2012. Indeed, every vote that goes to him is a vote that potentially costs the GOP in their battle to bring down Obama.

In this sense, Paul's renegade campaign looks startlingly similar to that of Ralph Nader's run against Al Gore and the establishment Democrats in 2000.

We all know how that turned out....

Funny stuff from The Onion

America Shuts Down for Tiger Woods TV Apology

Let's see: we've got a ballooning multiple trillion dollar national debt that threatens to bankrupt not only this generation but about the ten subsequent ones as well.

We are fighting two full on, vicious, bloody wars in far away places where the locals want us to leave. Yesterday.

The environment is a smoldering clusterfuck with species after species dwindling (except humans, of course) in number or going completely extinct, and natural habitats being destroyed by millions of acres every day...

The nation's health care system is completely off the rails with costs spiraling to the ionosphere and beyond--

And last but not least, it's becoming increasingly apparent that our nation's entire system of government--founded ostensibly on the principles of democracy and majority rule. Is completely, utterly...patently. Dysfunctional.

But Tiger Woods cheated on his wife. And now he's finally apologizing!

Iowa Republican Handicaps 2012 GOP Field

Wow, this article--ostensibly authored by a GOP 'insider' has Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee as the most likely candidates to win the GOP caucuses there in 2012.

We all know that neither Huckabee or Palin has any realistic chance whatsoever of becoming elected president (as Tina Fey said, if Palin wins "I'm leaving earth"...)

Which means that the Iowa GOP caucuses will be nearly completely irrelevant in 2012 just as they were in 2008 when Huckabee won and the eventual nominee John McCain didn't even run a campaign there.

Which happens to be a good thing: Iowa, a tiny, overwhelmingly white, totally unrepresentative rural state has no business having the type of influence it has nearly every presidential cycle due to it being the first state to hold its caucus or primary...

Rothenberg 2010 Senate Update

When it comes to American political prognostication, Stu Rothenberg is the gold standard.

As he states, the chances are infinitesimal that the GOP takes control of the Senate in 2010--however it is equally clear that they will make big gains.

The Senate was intractably deadlocked and dysfunctional with the Democrats having a 60-40 majority this past year. So much so that anything might be an improvement next year....that's what voters seem to indicating, at least--

Arnold Schwarzenegger Has A Question For His Golf Partner: "When Was Your Last Blow Job?"

Only in America folks.... Only. In. America...
My friend played in a Pro-Am with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. They introduce themselves and walk up to the first tee. Arnold has this huge cigar in his mouth as he puts the tee in the ground and asks my friend, "When was your last blow job?"
My friend chuckles a little bit and says, "A couple nights ago, I guess." Arnold doesn't say anything, pulls back the club and mid backswing (in his "Terminator" voice) asks, "How did it taste?" and swings through and shanks the ball 50 yards dead right out of bounds.

Bayh Announces Retirement

Wow, this is big...My initial thought is that he's doing this because he believes it will help him win the presidency one day. Bayh was Obama's close second choice to Joe Biden to be his VP choice. If his sole political ambition is to win the presidency, this is probably a smart move....get away from the partisanship morass that is today's DC and get above the fray...

Boy there hasn't been a lot of good news for the Democratic party over the past few months though...

The Indiana Senate seat just went from being safe Democrat to lean Republican takeover....

Joe the Plumber Goes Rogue

this is one of the funniest stories I've seen recently...

Wurzelbacher touched on several different points during his speech, and many of them were surprising. He said he doesn’t support Sarah Palin anymore. Why? Because she’s backing John McCain’s re-election effort. “John McCain is no public servant,” he told the room, calling the 2008 Republican nominee a career politician.

I pointed out he’d just be plain old Sam Wurzelbacher of Ohio — Joe the Plumber wouldn’t exist – without McCain. His response was blunt. “I don’t owe him s—. He really screwed my life up, is how I look at it.”

Tea Party Members: White and Angry

Alas, I digress....

These tea party folks are mainly aghast that a black man is inhabiting the White House and will vote overwhelmingly Republican in the upcoming midterm elections.

Forget all this anti-tax, anti big government bullshit: the pace of the federal government grew at its fastest pace in 30 years under George W. Bush and he turned the biggest fiscal surplus in American history into the biggest deficit in US history.

Gee...ummm. What party did he belong to??? Again, the tea party movement is a white power/racist movement. Very little else.

Tea Party Power: Armey Refuses to Endorse McCain in Arizona GOP Primary

John McCain will have a difficult time winning re-election in Arizona later this year, given the current environment in today's Republican party.

Although McCain has tried his hardest to transform over the past two years from a Democrat friendly, party establishment bucking maverick loved by the media and moderates alike--into a Sarah Palin/Rush Limbaugh wingnut, in anticipation of a tough re-election fight....

Apparently he has not done enough. You see these tea-partiers have long memories and they are radical: you had better be anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-government, and of course very pro gun rights.

John Edwards Engaged?

Could this story possibly get any more bizarre or sordid?

I am reading former aide Andrew Young's incredible new book The Politician and if you're even mildly interested in politics you will find it fascinating.

John Edwards is the poster child for America and indeed the world's current plague of selfish narcissism.  I believe the Facebook phenomenom is an outshoot of this as well.

Absolutely.  Fucking.  Incredible.

Indiana 2010: The Nuking of Dan Coats

Interesting article from the Politico today about the Indiana Senate race.  It looks like the Democrats have learned their lesson from Massachusetts.  Evan Bayh likes to think he's presidential material, and his campaign chest is loaded.  Looks like he knows how to run a campaign, too--

Huckabee Still 2012 GOP Leader in Alabama

They say Alabama is 'the heart of Dixie', and as this article illustrates, Mike Huckabee is still the strongest potential Republican candidate for president in 2012 in the deep south.

Which is good for Huckabee, but not so good for the rest of the party.  Huckabee stands nearly a 0% chance of ever being elected president: he is a very conservative, bible thumping, born again Christian and will never have broad, national appeal.

What he probably will do, though, is splinter the extreme right (aka 'wingnut') section of the Republican base vote with Sarah Palin, if she decides to run, and hurt the more electable party candidates like Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, and Jon Thune.

Right now, suffice to say, most sane GOP party elders are hoping that Huckabee stays on Fox News and away from running for president again in a few years.  Alabama is not very representative of the rest of the country.

Romney Goes Bowling

This is kind of cute.  You see about two years ago Obama embarrassed himself by showing himself to be nearly totally incompetent at bowling.  Romney, the GOP 2012 favorite, is trying to kill two birds with one stone here by raising cash ($150 to bowl), and ribbing the elitist, snob Obama....

Crist Hits 'Slick Miami Lobbyist" Rubio

This is pretty funny, and it will probably be really effective for Crist: make his tea party sponsored opponent seem like some slick, Hispanic (ie 'not white', 'not one of us') from Miami...

People who know Florida know that it is really two vastly different places that really have no business being in the same state: northern Florida, including the panhandle, is very very southern and conservative.  South Florida is a total melting pot brimming with dozens of ethnicities.

Crist's latest attacks are meant to influence the northern Floridian GOP....

This is the guy who will probably be facing Harry Reid in November.  I suddenly like Reid's chances for survival much better after watching this.  This guy just absolutely botched an analogy, and confused Harry Reid with Ronald Reagan???

Tea Party Convention Update

hat tip Americablog.com...
The reports from reporters on the scene is that Joseph Farah, the editor of WorldNetDaily, a far-right online publication that is highly influential with the Republican party, is spending most of his speech at the Tea Party conference questioning Obama's birth and citizenship. According to the reporters, the crowd is loving it. They just gave him a standing ovation. And this is a new "political party." It's the worst of the worst of the Republican party. All the hate and paranoia distilled. Wonder if the Washington Post will continue to write about the Teabaggers as if they're the second coming of George Washington.

And yes, Farah does bear a creepy resemblance to Freddy Mercury of Queen.

Here are a few of the Tweets:

@daveweigel: Joe Farah's entire speech basically about Obama's birth certificate.

Obama Takes Shot at Birthers During Speech

Obama is not taking his political setback in Massachusetts a few weeks back sitting down.

Hey, stranger things have happened when a politician faces the end of the line....

He's a tremendous politician, and no doubt has been giving this serious thought.

Schumer, Durbin prepare to Rumble if Reid Loses Re-election

This is an interesting snapshot of the power struggle that will ensue if Harry Reid loses his Nevada Senate seat later this year. Polls show that he is in serious trouble.

If you are a Democrat, you'd really hope that Schumer and Durbin would be spending their time and cash helping other Democrats win in November....and not on themselves.

I wouldn't expect too much out of this, although it certainly will be both awkward and interesting: O'Reilly tends to pussy out and have a markedly different temperament when he 'interviews' very successful left-leaning entertainers like Colbert and Stewart.

Deep down, I believe O'Reilly, like Limbaugh and Glen Beck, and other racist wingnut homophobes are self loathing.

Limbaugh 'thanks God every day' for Obama's problems

Here's some real patriotism coming from the de-facto leader of today's Republican party, Rush Limbaugh...

And to think millions of his 'dittoheads' listen to his three hour radio program daily....

Gee, I wonder where the toxic partisanship in Washington is coming from???

Poll: Republicans Think Obama Is A Socialist, And Palin More Qualified To Be President

Lots of people--indeed the vast majority of people, have no clue of what they are saying when they toss around the word "Socialism", so that's not really a big surprise to me...

The Post Office? Socialist. Police departments, fire departments? Socialist. Libraries? Socialist. The US military? Socialist. Buses, subways, airport security...socialist. Stop signs, speed limits? Socialist. Hospital emergency rooms? Socialist.

I mean, can anyone tell me the significance of someone calling someone else a Socialist is? Absurd.

But how anyone on planet earth can say that Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president is beyond me.

I mean, am I living in the Twilight Zone or something? Did people happen to miss the Katie Couric interview? The debate with Joe Biden? The fact that she named her kids Bristol, Willow, Track, and Trig??

Virginia Delegate Fighting To Invalidate Health Reform: Reform Is ‘Criminal,’ An Attempt To Take ‘Your Soul’

Story here. This man is a textbook Wingnut.

Can't Buy "The Politician" on Amazon.com

Wow, I just went on Barnes and Noble.com for like the first time in my life because due to a pissing contest Amazon.com is having with a major publisher (MacMillan), you can't buy the new book about John Edwards "The Politician" on its website.

Read good review of 'The Politician' here....

Apparently the whole e-reader business is undergoing real time upheaval with Apple's introduction of the Ipad.

Whatever, but Amazon please clean up this mess. You're losing business.

GOP Targets Senate Seat in Obama's Illinois

Republican Illinois Senate candidate Mark Kirk is a lot like recently elected Scott Brown of Massachusetts:

Moderate, pro-choice....clearly not a tea-bagging wingnut.

As with Harry Reid's election in Nevada, the Republican party is salivating at the idea of winning a Senate seat in Obama's adopted home state of Illinois. It would be a humiliating poke in the eye for a politically sinking president and his party....

Things currently look very good for the GOP nationwide, but the lingering question remains: Will the tea-bagging base voters pull the lever for 'RINOs'? (RINO=Republican In Name Only...)

Has Obama Lost Jon Stewart?

With the Vietnam war raging, Lyndon Johnson famously said 40 years ago that 'If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost America'....

This story isn't quite as dramatic as that, but still Jon Stewart is arguably America's current most important, serious political journalist.

Which says something about the quality of political journalism in our country....and also about Obama's current political troubles--
