New York City: Still a Marijuana Gulag

Here is an excellent article on New York City's draconian and counterproductive marijuana laws.

Basically, if you get busted for weed by the police in NYC--even for just a joint, you will be spending the night in jail and will be saddled with a criminal record for the rest of your life.

New York City--so progressive, forward thinking and trend setting on so many things, is basically a harsh, punitive third world backwater along the lines of Tehran, Pyongang, or Myanmar with regards to its Marijuana laws.

The question must be asked: why? Especially considering the fact that Mayor Mike Bloomberg has been so good in so many other ways and admitted that he's smoked weed and enjoyed it?

The answer is that since Rudy Giuliani incorporated these rules with regard to weed over a decade ago, 90% of the resulting arrests have been either Blacks or Hispanics, and the numbers of petty crimes in the city have plummeted.

Rich white folks get richer and stay out of jail, while the often industrious folks who provide them with their insatiable desire for weed--which of course be legal, get humiliatingly stopped and frisked for no reason and then rot in jail.

The system is patently unjust. New York City: Marijuana Gulag.

Statement by John McCain:

My friend, Ted Kennedy, was famous before he was accomplished. But by the end of his life he had become irreplaceable in the institution he loved and in the affections of its members. He grew up in the long shadow of his brothers, but found a way to be useful to his country in ways that will outlast their accomplishments.

Many of his fellow senators, Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, will note today that Ted was sincerely intent on finding enough common ground among us to make progress on the issues of our day, and toward that end he would work as hard and as modestly as any staffer. Many will recall his convivial nature, his humor, his thoughtfulness. We will praise as his greatest strength the integrity of his word. When he made a promise to you, he kept it, no matter what.

What is harder for us to express is the emptiness we will feel in the Senate in his absence. Even when we are all crowded in the chamber for a vote, engaged in dozens of separate conversations, it will seem a quiet and less interesting place, in the knowledge that his booming voice, fueled by his passion for his convictions, will never encourage or assail or impress us again.

I will miss him very much.

Obama Changes the Subject

After a pretty brutal August, the political brain trust of Team Obama--a pretty formidable group, finally decided to change the subject.

Quit talking about health care, start talking about the torture policy of the horrendously awful previous administration.

Marijuana Growing Thriving in California Forests

This is a really interesting read...

The only problem I have with the growers is the negative environmental impact of the pesticides they use to cultivate the herbs and obviously the destructive fires they accidentally set from time to time...

Both issues, of course, would be solved if America did the wise thing and regulated, taxed, and legalized marijuana...

The growers are merely satisfying this country's insatiable appetite for weed, and are not unlike the alcohol bootleggers during prohibition.

The ongoing health care reform 'debate' in America has been embarrassing and disgraceful.

Indeed, a pessimist might say it provides a snapshot of a society in deep, irrevocable decline.

The words 'socialism', 'Nazi', 'death panels' and 'liberty' are being tossed around by lazy idiots who haven't read a book in their entire lives, yet all of a sudden are experts on finance, health, and political theory...

These are the same dolts who voted for George W. Bush in 2004. They are pigeons: impressionable little puppets who watch Fox News every night and actually take it seriously.

President Obama, your quest for bipartisanship and friendliness towards your enemies is admirable and commendable, it is exactly what Jesus Christ teaches us to do...

But it is getting you nowhere with these angry, block of ice between the ears, assholes.

Birthers, Deathers, and Truthers

We are living in a really, really weird era in American political history where bizarre conspiracy theories are becoming increasingly accepted by people in the mainstream frustrated by their decreasing lots in life during this brutal recession and searching for a greater meaning.

I would like to focus on three here--two which are piping hot and in the news right now, and another another one that's nearly a decade old now but keeps growing. The fact that any rational person could actually believe any contain even a morsel of truth is, well....really weird.

1. "Birthers"--Discussed in an earlier blog post on this page, these largely innately racist white Americans just can't accept the fact that a black man is their Commander in Chief--it's too much of a shock to them. To fight this bitter reality they have signed on to the birther movement which espouses the completely, 100% debunked theory that President Obama was born in Kenya or Indonesia or something and therefore was illegitimately elected, and is not really the president. Well ok then...
2. "Deathers"--Perhaps an even more bizarre lot are the new "Deathers". In a desperate effort to halt American health care reform, right wing lunatic groups are spreading the rumor that under Obama's plan, old people will be forcibly euthanized by the government. Makes complete sense to me!
3. "Truthers"--These are the folks who believe September 11 was a government engineered plot--either by the American government or the Israeli government or both. They point to how the buildings collapsed, the types of people who were present in the buildings at the time of the events, etc. as proof positive that it was all pre-planned by 'those in the know'. Sign me up!

The cold truth is that dumb, uneducated people are most likely to fall for these absurd notions hook, line, and sinker.

Unfortunately, we can these days never underestimate the power of the American people to, well, be really dumb....Around 62 million people voted for George W. Bush's reelection in 2004.
