Obama Caught in Awkward Exchange with Citizen
It's a little hokey in the first place that Obama makes a big deal out of getting a hamburger at a local joint frequently these days. As if we're supposed to believe he is some regular Joe Shmo/everyman or something....
This exchange with a local defense official who happened to too, be getting a hamburger, made it downright awkward....

It's no secret that Hispanics and immigrant groups of all kinds have left the Republican party in droves over the past two national elections, a product of both the party's anti-immigration stance and the fact that xenophobic, Lilly white freaks like Rush Limbaugh seem to run the party.The party also faces a widening gender gap, with women voting by a wide majority for Obama in last November's election. Remember, Hillary Clinton nearly won the Democratic nomination and millions of moderate women supported her.
Obama in a very savvy move checked both of those boxes in picking Sonia Sotomayor as his Supreme Court nominee.
It would be a nihilistic exercise in self flagellation/self destruction for Republicans in Congress to listen to the extreme right wing of their base and oppose her.
Could they possibly be so tone deaf, stupid, scared of Rush Limbaugh, and seemingly ignorant of the electoral consequences of their actions?

North Korea Nuke Test: Who Cares?
The frenzied media mania that follows every nuclear test blast these days never fails to surprise me, most recently the reaction yesterday to North Korea's underground explosion.Don't people realize that North Korea is a poor, sparsely populated country that WOULD BE IMMEDIATELY EXTERMINATED if they actually launched a feeble nuclear attack on another country?
I mean, nuclear weaponry is what, a 60 or 70 year old technology anyway, right? It's only a matter of time before virtually every meaningful nation becomes a nuclear power...

Slides Show How Rumsfeld Manipulated W on Iraq
The Bush administration has only been gone for about three months now, but it seems much longer than that. From recent revelations about systemic, brutal, state sponsored American torture, to the simmering disaster that the American economy was left in, it's becoming increasingly clear that history books will look at the eight years of the Bush Jr. regime as a dark, backward period in America.
Don't underestimate the influence of Donald Rumsfeld in what became an unmitigated disaster of a presidency--a presidency that moved America back decades if not centuries in terms of world opinion.
We all know that W thought that God spoke directly to him--a terrifying notion for the president of the United States to actually believe. Indeed he's claimed that God Himself green-lighted the invasion of Iraq.
We also know that none other than Henry Kissinger called Donald Rumsfeld "the most ruthless man" he had ever met. Keep in mind Kissinger served Nixon during Vietnam and met with dozens of despots, thugs, and liars both inside and out of the American government during his service.
Now check out these slides that have recently surfaced from GQ magazine produced by Rummy's Pentagon right after the invasion of Iraq, delivered directly to the impressionable boy-emperor W by the Robespierre like Rumsfeld himself, daily.
Of all the disastrous decisions made by Bush Jr. during his failed presidency--and there literally were thousands of them, starting with naming Dick Cheney as his VP--appointing Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense, in a surprise move made on December 29, 2000, shortly after the Supreme Court had ruled on Bush v. Gore, was, in my opinion, the worst.
Take a look at the picture on the right taken from the mid-70's when both Cheney and Rumsfeld served in the Ford administration. In a lot of ways, it sums up the presidency of George W. Bush nearly three decades later. Imagine a toddler down there at their knees.

Spitzer criticized the bank stress tests and said the middle class will suffer the most as a result. He said that without any change in bank behaviors, the banking crisis would only continue to persist and grow.

If Republicans were to try and moderate some of their divisive right wing issues like abortion and gay marriage, they would lose what remains of their 'base'--these very same largely southern, religious conservative voters--which would instantly devastate the party electorally.
The problem, indeed, seems nearly intractable....
